Hungary Case Study - Agricultural biogas digestates [Sep. 2019]

Summary

2017 -

The 3F-CROPLAND project on complex utilization of agricultural biogas digestates has been developed to improve the productivity of polyculture fish farming and horticultural production. It produces value-added macro- and micro-granulated organic and organic-mineral fertilisers prepared from digestate through eco-innovative procedures. This is to minimize carbon and nitrogen loss and phosphorus runoff in the plant-soil system. The aim of the project is to reuse all agricultural biogas digestate in freshwater fish farming and in horticultural production.

The practice may decrease operational costs of polyculture fish farming and intensified horticulture production. By reusing processed digestate in a form of certificated pathogen-free micro-granulated fertiliser in polyculture fish farming to enhance zooplankton biomass yield as a primary protein source. And, by providing value-added macro- and micro-granulated organic and organic-mineral fertilisers prepared from digestate through eco-innovative procedures to minimize carbon and nitrogen loss and phosphorus runoff in the plant-soil system.

Highlights

-

  • Technical excellence within biogas production and value-added byproducts
  • Renewable energy by converting organic waste from agriculture (turkey manure, corn silage, meat processing industrial residue) into green electricity
  • Large potential for digestate pelletization to produce slow-release organic fertiliser to use in horticulture
  • Large potential for production of certificated pathogen-free micro-granulated fertiliser for polyculture fish farming to enhance zooplankton biomass
