Transport

CO2 emissions from road transport have increased by 61.6% from 1990 to 2015. Moreover, Croatia is facing challenges in meeting the Europe 2020 target of 10 % renewable energy in transport (in 2015 the share was 3.5%). A major effort is therefore required for the decarbonisation of the transport sector in the next decade.

Buildings

In 2015, the residential sector was the largest energy-consuming sector representing 36.7% of total energy consumption, well above the EU average (25.4%). As the building sector in Croatia accounts for 43% of final energy consumption, special attention is paid to a more intense implementation of national programmes of building renovation.

Agriculture

In 2015 the total emission agriculture accounted for 10.9% of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Croatia. Methane and nitrous oxide (N2O) were the primary GHG discharged as a consequence of agricultural activities (Figure 5.1-1). Of all the ruminants, dairy cattle are the largest source of methane (CH4) emissions. Agricultural soil management, manure management and agricultural engineering result in relatively high levels of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Emissions generated by burning agricultural residues were not included in the calculation because this activity is prohibited under Croatian regulations
